This paper discusses the detection of P V 1118,1128 and other broad absorption lines (BALs) in archival HST spectra of the low-redshift BALQSO, PG 1254+047. The P V identification is secured by excellent redshift and profile coincidences with the other BALs, such as C IV 1548,1550 and Si IV 1393,1403, and by photoionization calculations showing that other lines near this wavelength, e.g. Fe III 1123, should be much weaker than P V. The observed BAL strengths imply that either 1) there are...

In proper hyperbolic geodetic spaces we construct rooted $\mathbb R$-trees with the following properties. On the one hand, every ray starting at the root is quasi-geodetic; so these $\mathbb R$-trees represent the space itself well. At the same time, the trees boundary reflects the boundary of the space in that the number of disjoint rays to a boundary point is bounded in terms of the (Assouad) dimension of the hyperbolic boundary.

We look at group actions on metric spaces, particularly at group actions on geodesic hyperbolic spaces. We classify the types of automorphisms on these spaces and prove several results about the density of the hyperbolic limit set of the group in the whole limit set of the group. In the case of graphs, our theorems hold also when the graphs are not hyperbolic.

Intrinsic emission and absorption lines of QSOs provide several independent probes of the metal abundances in QSO environments. They indicate that the metallicities are typically solar or higher out to redshifts z > 4. These results support models of galaxy evolution where galactic nuclei, or dense condensations that later become galactic nuclei, form stars and evolve quickly at redshifts higher than the QSOs themselves.

Eta Carinae's inner ejecta are dominated observationally by the bright Weigelt blobs and their famously rich spectra of nebular emission and absorption lines. They are dense (n_e ~ 10^7 to 10^8 cm^-3), warm (T_e ~ 6000 to 7000 K) and slow moving (~40 km/s) condensations of mostly neutral (H^0) gas. Located within 1000 AU of the central star, they contain heavily CNO-processed material that was ejected from the star about a century ago. Outside the blobs, the inner ejecta include absorption-line...

Methods of general applicability are searched for in swarm intelligence with the aim of gaining new insights about natural swarms and to develop design methodologies for artificial swarms. An ideal solution could be a `swarm calculus' that allows to calculate key features of swarms such as expected swarm performance and robustness based on only a few parameters. To work towards this ideal, one needs to find methods and models with high degrees of generality. In this paper, we report two models...

The paper investigates the converse to the following theorem. Let R be a differential domain R which is finitely generated over a differential field F whose field of constants is algebraically closed of characteristic 0. If R has no proper nonzero differential ideals, then the quotient field, E, of R has no new constants. The converse is false, but a question was raised about the existence of a finitely generated extension of R within E which has no proper nonzero differential ideals when E has...

We investigate the structure of connected graphs, not necessarily locally finite, with infinitely many ends. On the one hand we study end-transitive such graphs and on the other hand we study such graphs with the property that the stabilizer of some end acts transitively on the vertices of the graph. In both cases we show that the graphs have a tree-like structure.

We prove that the first homology group of every planar locally transitive finite graph $G$ is a finitely generated ${\rm Aut}(G)$-module and we prove a similar result for the fundamental group of locally finite planar Cayley graphs. Corollaries of these results include Droms's theorem that planar groups are finitely presented and Dunwoody's theorem that planar locally finite transitive graphs are accessible.

The heavy elements near QSOs provide unique measures of the star formation and chemical evolution in young galactic nuclei or pre-galactic condensations. Studies of quasar abundances also naturally address a variety of questions regarding the physics of QSO environments, including the Baldwin Effect emphasized at this meeting. Here I review the status of quasar abundance work.

A number of recent analyses of cosmological data have reported hints for the presence of extra radiation beyond the standard model expectation. In order to test the robustness of these claims under different methods of constructing parameter constraints, we perform a Bayesian posterior-based and a likelihood profile-based analysis of current data. We confirm the presence of a slight discrepancy between posterior- and profile-based constraints, with the marginalised posterior preferring higher...

We prove that the cut space of any transitive graph $G$ is a finitely generated ${\rm Aut}(G)$-module if the same is true for its cycle space. This confirms a conjecture of Diestel which says that every locally finite transitive graph whose cycle space is generated by cycles of bounded length is accessible. In addition, it implies Dunwoody's conjecture that locally finite hyperbolic transitive graphs are accessible. As a further application, we obtain a combinatorial proof of Dunwoody's...

Let R be a differential domain finitely generated over a differential field, F, with field of constants, C, of characteristic 0. Let E be the quotient field of R. The paper investigates necessary and sufficient conditions on R's differential ideals for the constants of differentiation of E to also be C (no new constants). It was known that no proper nonzero differential ideals guarantees no new constants. The paper shows that when C is algebraically closed that if R has only finitely many...

In this paper we construct spanning trees in hyperbolic graphs that represent their hyperbolic compactification in a good way: so that the tree has a bounded number of distinct rays to each boundary point. The bound depends only on the (Assouad) dimension of the boundary. As a corollary we sharpen a result of Gromov which says that from every hyperbolic graph with bounded degrees one can construct a tree outside the graph with a continuous surjection from the ends of the tree onto the...

Let D be a differential domain finitely generated over a differential field F with algebraically closed field of constants,C, of characteristic 0. Strong absorption lines are common in rest-frame UV spectra of AGNs due to a variety of resonant transitions, for example the HI Lyman series lines (most notably Ly-alpha 1216) and high-ionization doublets like CIV 1549,1551. The lines are called ``intrinsic'' if the absorbing gas is physically related to the AGN, e.g. if the absorber resides broadly within the radius of the AGN's surrounding ``host'' galaxy. Intrinsic absorption lines are thus valuable probes of the kinematics, physical...

Several studies have shown that the column densities inferred from broad absorption lines (BALs) require extremely high metallicities and phosphorus overabundances -- apparently in conflict with other abundance diagnostics. Here I use HST spectroscopy of the BALQSO PG 1254+047 to argue that the BALs abundance estimates are incorrect, because partial line-of-sight coverage of the continuum source(s) has led to gross underestimates of the line optical depths and column densities. I claim that the...

This paper provides a general reference for deriving the ionizations and metal abundances for absorption-line clouds in photoionization equilibrium with a QSO spectrum. The results include a quantitative assessment of the theoretical uncertainties and firm lower limits on the metallicities when no ionization constraints are available. Major gas-rich mergers of galaxies are expected to play an important role in triggering and fuelling luminous AGN. We present deep multi-band (u/r/z) imaging and long slit spectroscopy of four double-peaked [OIII] emitting AGN, a class of objects associated with either kcp-separated binary AGN or final stage major mergers, though AGN with complex narrow-line regions are known contaminants. Such objects are of interest since they represent the onset of AGN activity during the merger process....

We investigated a sample of 15 luminous high-redshift quasars (3.3 < z < 5.1) to measure the mass of their super-massive black holes (SMBH) and compare, for the first time, results based on CIV, MgII, and Hbeta emission lines at high-redshifts. Assuming gravitationally bound orbits as dominant broad-line region gas motion, we determine black hole masses in the range of M_bh = 2 times 10^8 M_sun up to M_bh = 4 times 10^10 M_sun.
